Introduction

KARACHI INSTITUTE OF KIDNEY DISEASES was established in 2009 & remained nonfunctional till 2016 due to the unavailability of funds. After an M.O.U signed between KARACHI METROPOLITAN CORPORATION and KARACHI INSTITUTE OF KIDNEY DISEASES ASSOCIATION in 2017, it became functional, and just within the period of three years, the institute is now ranked 2nd after S.I.U.T in the public sector in providing dialysis and other facilities free of cost to kidney patients.

The sole purpose of this initiative was to fight against the ever-growing cases of kidney-related diseases and complications.

Dialysis Unit

The early KIKDA operation started with only a few dialysis machines at hand. The dialysis capacity of the institution was the bare minimum at that time. First and foremost, attention was dedicated to the dialysis center and constant efforts were made to increase its functional capacity with the addition of more and more dialysis machines.

Today, KIKDA has a total of 60 technologically advanced dialysis machines. Over 170 dialysis in three consecutive shifts are performed every day. After kidney failure, dialysis is the only vital option left to save a patient’s life. KIKDA Dialysis Center extended crucial life support to kidney-failure patients, more than fifty-seven thousand 45,600 Dialysis sessions were performed in the year 2021, and the number of dialysis will be increased by 30 % in 2022.

Consultant Clinics

The association has given significant attention to preventing the spread of kidney failures and providing an early diagnosis with robust medical treatment. Hence, an outpatient department is inaugurated, comprising leading consultants in the fields of nephrology and urology, providing six days per-week medical checkup facility for patients. An estimated 28,000 patients were treated in OPD last year. This year the number of patients has increased by 28%

Diagnostic Laboratory

KIKDA soon felt the desperate need for an effective laboratory unit. Patients had to make cumbersome efforts to get their medical test reports from privately owned laboratories. After commencing its Operation, KIKDA Laboratory started performing relevant medical tests and their reports were readily available for speedy diagnosis, saving valuable time and money for deprived and underprivileged masses of society. KIKDA Lab is equipped with the latest machines and diagnostic instruments. The In-house laboratory is another milestone to achieve the ‘All Under One Roof’ vision envisaged by KIKDA at the start of its foundation.

Operation Theater

The instigation of state-of-the-art operation theatre tremendously contributed to performing all urological operations and surgeries, we do perform 20 to 25 major and minor surgeries successfully including, PCNL, URS, RIRS, Flexible URS, Cystolitholapaxy, TURP, TURBT, Nephrectomy, AFV, Perma-Cath Placement.

Intensive Care Unit

The well-equipped Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has been doing a heroic job taking care of patients in critical conditions thus contributing substantially to saving lives. The department consists of 7 beds with all required medical equipment including Ventilators, well-trained staff and qualified doctors who are available 24/7 to take care of admitted patients.

Medical/General wards

To facilitate post/pre-operation and nephrology patients, we have separate male and female general wards, we also have one daycare unit with 10 beds and 1 HDU with 6 beds. Qualified doctors and experienced staff provide constant surveillance and take care of medically impaired patients.

Lithotripsy Department

The KIKDA always extended its full support for ingenious solutions to kidney-related issues and problems. A modern lithotripsy unit was founded to treat kidney stones using ultrasonic shockwaves. Lithotripsy is a noninvasive procedure that cures kidney stones without any surgery. KIKDA is the second largest public-funded organization providing free-of-charge lithotripsy treatment in Karachi. This year we have treated more than 3000 patients with a 100% success rate.

Radiology Department

KIKDA is the place where all the facilities are available under one roof, the radiology department is providing a complete solution to the patients, and we provide X-ray, ultrasound, doppler, biopsy, echocardiography, and CT-scan services free of charge to underprivileged kidney patients.

Community Awareness Program

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been recognized as a leading public health problem worldwide. The global estimated prevalence of CKD is 13.4%. The best solution to handle this situation is to aware the general public about this disease, KIKDA has started public awareness programs in which we target the rural areas of the city, factories, colleges and universities, and the corporate sector to raise public awareness.
