Brief Overview
Behbud Association Karachi is a nonprofit organization working across education, healthcare and vocational training to support underserved communities in Karachi. Its schools provide quality education, health centers offer medical care, and programs such as the Industrial Home and Behbud Creations equip women with artisan and craft skills to earn an income.
Through these interconnected programs, Behbud aims to improve education and health outcomes while creating sustainable economic opportunities. Its approach combines direct community engagement with donor partnerships to support long-term, measurable change.
Core Programs and Services
Education: Behbud operates schools providing quality, affordable education to children from low-income communities, with a focus on foundational learning and school completion.
Healthcare: Health centers, including Mehmoodabad facilities, provide medical services and health awareness programs to families facing barriers to affordable care.
Vocational Training: The Industrial Home trains women in tailoring, embroidery and other crafts, equipping them with skills for income-generating work.
Behbud Creations: Provides women artisans with sustainable income through marketable handcrafted products while preserving traditional crafts.
Digital & Community Centers: Initiatives such as the Mahmoodabad Computer Lab provide digital literacy and empowerment opportunities to underserved communities.
What Makes Our Approach Distinct
Behbud’s model is distinguished by its integrated approach, combining education, healthcare and vocational training so programs reinforce one another within the same communities. Its vocational and artisan initiatives, including Behbud Creations, focus on sustainable livelihoods, enabling women to earn ongoing income and build long-term economic independence. By equipping women with skills that benefit their households and local economies, the model creates a multiplier effect beyond direct beneficiaries.
Impact Stories
Case Study: Afshan’s Story
Challenge: Afshan and her younger sister Mehwish lost their parents at a young age and grew up without ever attending school. At 17, unable to read or write, Afshan was turned away from a beautician training course because she was illiterate — closing off the one path she saw toward earning a living.
Support Provided: Afshan enrolled in Behbud’s Adult Literacy Course. Over the course of a year, with the guidance of Behbud’s teachers, she learned to read and write in Urdu, picked up basic English, and gained foundational math skills.
Outcome: With her new literacy skills, Afshan was accepted into the beautician training course that had once rejected her. She now owns and runs her own salon in her neighborhood. Inspired by her sister’s transformation, Mehwish has since enrolled in the same Adult Literacy Course herself.
