Brief Overview
We are a Karachi-based nonprofit providing psychiatric treatment and rehabilitation to people who cannot afford mental healthcare. Since 1983, we have operated a 114-bed hospital, an outpatient psychiatric centre, and monthly medical camps across Karachi and surrounding areas.
Our services include psychiatric consultation, diagnosis, medication, psychological assessment, therapy and tele-psychiatry, with most patients treated free of cost and others receiving subsidized medication. We combine treatment, rehabilitation and community outreach to help people with serious, long-term mental illness manage their conditions and reintegrate into their families and communities.
Core Programs and Services
Karwan-e-Hayat operates an integrated mental health system centered on inpatient care, outpatient treatment, rehabilitation, and community outreach.
Inpatient Facility: A 114-bed Psychiatric Care and Rehabilitation Centre in Keamari provides 24/7 hospitalization, nursing care, medication, meals and structured routines for patients with severe mental illness.
Outpatient Clinics: Fixed OPDs at Keamari and Korangi provide psychiatric consultation, diagnosis, follow-up and medication management, with neurological consultation and tele-psychiatry extending access.
Rehabilitation and Occupational Therapy: Day-care programs build daily living skills, social functioning and vocational readiness through therapy, family counseling and occupational activities, alongside crisis-house support.
Community Outreach and Mental Wellness: Over 50 free medical camps are held monthly at 23 Karachi locations, offering consultations, medicines, home visits and psychoeducation, alongside mental wellness workshops and awareness sessions.
What Makes Our Approach Distinct
KEH integrates clinical care, rehabilitation, sustainability, and community support through a holistic approach. Its triangular care model places the patient, doctor, and patient’s family at the centre of the recovery process, recognizing the family as a key stakeholder in long-term care. As an ISO-certified, Shariah-compliant, PCP-certified facility with a Regular License from SHCC, Karwan-e-Hayat combines quality standards with accessible care. Solar-powered wards reduce costs and environmental impact, while patient gyms, art and social-skills therapy, green spaces, and healthy social-media workshops support holistic recovery, helping patients build healthier, more independent lives.
Impact Stories
Ahmed*, aged 38, was working as a distributor at a textile factory in Karachi when he began experiencing symptoms of schizophrenia. As his condition worsened, his family struggled to understand what was happening and initially sought help from faith healers. They later spent their limited savings on treatment at a private psychiatric facility, but Ahmed did not improve.
Eventually, he was referred to Karwan-e-Hayat, where he received highly subsidized psychiatric treatment and joined a six-month rehabilitation program combining medication, daycare, occupational therapy, and regular follow-up. His family also received psychoeducation to better understand his condition and support his recovery.
Today, Ahmed participates in Karwan-e-Hayat’s Sheltered Employment Program, where he teaches art to other patients. He has regained confidence, contributes financially to his family, and looks forward to building his future.
“I am grateful to Karwan-e-Hayat for helping me become stable and return to a normal life.”
